Handwoven Conference Nametags

Nametags at the conference were nestled into gorgeous handwoven paper pouches created by members of the Tzouhalem Spinners & Weavers Guild, located in Duncan, BC. A true salute to the conference theme, Treadle Softly, this was an example of upcycling at its finest.

The project was designed and led by Alison Irwin, one of our conference instructors. She credits Joan Carrigan, another of the conference’s instructors and a basket maker on Saltspring Island for inspiring the technique.  Alison developed her techniques for the pouches based on a class she took from Joan in 2008, where they used strips of willow bark to create a bias weave basket.

Numerous other Tzouhalem Guild members spent long hours creating the 650 pouches used at the conference. A huge thank you to all who contributed.
